The Dichotomy of Motherhood

In honor of Mother's Day and all the beautiful mama's across species (including my very own), I am sharing a video piece I created as part of my graduate work. Its a hard hitter, so I encourage you to stick it out, in honor of Mother's everywhere - especially those who have suffered an incomprehensible loss, that we can only seek to imagine...

Due to the capacity of the female gender to reproduce, there is a dualistic nature of mothers, who, regardless of species, have been systematic to the practices of domination over the female body. This dualistic nature, combined with a patriarchal society that oppresses, creates an inherent dissociation of mothers, and the female sex, that divides the human and bovine, with milk as the literal and figurative common thread and signifier. These “Othered” inherently female bodies, are those whom do not identify as cisgender males and exist within and because of, patriarchal and capitalist austerity. However, within this divide there exists a hypocrisy of motherhood as speciesist, due to preconceived ideologies of what defines reproductive agency and the ability to nurture one’s child.

Also a shoutout to my husband who made this producers dream a beautifully edited reality.
